About Blazing Star School
Blazing Star’s mission is to provide a joyful learning community, where children are given the freedom to explore the world.
We offer an academic year program, as well as a robust schedule of summer camps and day off camps. We are offering an early childhood program in Fall 2024, as well as after school and weekend classes for elementary aged kids.
Imagine that instead of sitting in a seat all day doing worksheets and taking tests, reading or being read to about the world, your child could have the freedom to actually experience the world every day. Our self-directed learners can choose how and what they want to learn, when and how to move their bodies, and spend more time cultivating meaningful relationships with their peers and teachers than in a conventional school.
At Blazing Star, we view children as scientists, artists, explorers, and storytellers. We aim to provide a rich environment where children, who are naturally curious from birth, can continue to develop as problem solvers and critical thinkers, just as they were when they taught themselves to walk and talk.
In short, we view children as capable human beings, and our staff as facilitators to help them in their individual journeys, rather than viewing children as empty vessels for experts to fill with a preset curriculum. We live in a world where more information is available at our fingertips than ever before. In 20 years, our kids will likely have jobs that don’t even exist today. So why are we still schooling our children in a setting designed for the industrial revolution? Why are we training children to be good factory workers, instead of embracing their naturally entrepreneurial zeal for life?
Ultimately, we want our students to be life-long learners - confident in their own abilities to ask good questions, find resources to help solve problems, and capable leaders and collaborators who work well with others to accomplish their goals.
Who is this school for?
-Families who think wonder, joy, and exploration should be the basis for learning.
-Families who think learning should be personalized and differentiated for every student.
-Families who want more family time at home, and fewer arguments about homework.
-Families who want their child to be excited to go to school in the morning.
-Families who want their child to be guided by self-motivation and curiosity, rather than grades and test scores.
-Kids who love playing outside and moving their bodies.
-Kids who love to deep dive into their interests and want more time at school to pursue their passions.
-Kids who love to work together and collaborate - we often say one of the prime benefits of school is socialization, yet children get in trouble for talking to each other for MOST of their 7 hour school day!
-Families who value hands-on, real world learning experiences over worksheets and standardized tests.
-Families who want their child to have a real relationship with their teachers, not just be a number.
-Families who believe children are natural learners, and think school should be a resource for kids to discover their passions.
-Families who believe children should be able to eat, use the restroom, and move their bodies when they need to.
-Families who think caring for the earth, each other, and ourselves should be a fundamental part of education.
-Families who want to homeschool/unschool but have to or want to work.
-Families who want to unschool but want their child to be part of a daily learning community.
